History of the Art Quilt Alliance
Art Quilt Alliance was organized in 1991 by a group of fiber artists in the
Columbus area. The group provides encouragement, exhibition
opportunities, professional guidelines and information exchange.
Emphasis is on original works. Presently we are about 40 strong and
have members with expertise in many areas of fiber art. In past years we
have issued group challenges, with several members participating and
producing diverse and outstanding quilts.
An art quilt can have the same basic construction as a traditional quilt but
is created as a piece of art for the wall. Quilt artists challenge the
traditional definition of the quilt. The quilt artist seeks to innovate by
applying art principles and art experience from other areas like drawing,
painting and mixed media as well as working with the tactile richness of
fabric and adding the textures of quilting stitches.
Each year we exhibit in many venues throughout Ohio. Though we mainly
show in the Columbus area, we have had opportunities in Lancaster,
Westerville, Chillicother, Newark, Hamilton and Mt. Vernon. Recent group
shows have been at The Works, High Street Gallery, Inniswood Metro
Parks and Groveport Community Center. In addition, individual members
have been juried into and placed in prestigious national and international
art and quilt shows and competitions.
